It’s the classic ‘hair of the dog’ bevvie, but a good Bloody Mary is so much more than just a hangover cure. Which you’ll soon discover, if you head to one of the venues below…
An obvious place to start! Bloody Mary’s is half-bar, half-American diner, and an all-round awesome place to kick back with something red and spicy. Try the mighty ‘Bloody Hell’, made with chilli vodka and garnished with celery, a prawn, a buffalo wing, and an entire slider. They’ve got loads of other varieties, and you can even make your own bloody cocktail if none take your fancy.

Dark, cosy and indescribably cool, the Bearded Tit is one of Sydney’s finest neighbourhood bars. It’s also an art gallery, and it’s got a heap of design quirks you’ll fall instantly in love with (we particularly like the beat-up old caravan outside). As for the Bloody Mary? It’s called a ‘Hail Mary’ here, and it’s described as “spicy as hell”. With three kinds of hot sauce chucked in, it’s kind of hard to argue – but we guarantee you’ll love the burn.
“As far as local bars go, this place is perfection. Friendly, fun, awesome cocktails, a safe for all environment and so much care and thought has been put into the decor. It’s obviously been a labour of love. Very cool. Very hip and so Redfern.” – jasonealey
Known for its gin cocktails, Franco-Dutch-inspired food, and literal flagons of mead (yes, really), the Powder Keg is a fantastic venue for a drink and a late-night bite. The ‘BBQ Mary’ is a marvellous concoction, with horseradish root vodka, BBQ bitters, and their special steak-smoked Mary mix. It also comes with dehydrated maple-infused bacon, cherry tomatoes, and a beef jerky straw.
“I had an awesome time at the powder keg! Lots of drinks to choose from – I had the honey mead sour and my partner had the BBQ Mary. They were both beautifully presented and delicious. we only had cheese board to share (and it was good, though it’s hard to mess up a cheese board!) but the other dishes that passed us by looked delicious too. We’ll be back for sure.” – spooktacular
The most cheekily named establishment in Sydney, the Stuffed Beaver also does a mean Bloody Caesar. This is a Canadian take on the classic Bloody Mary, whipped up with chilli vodka, celery, a dill pickle, tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, and clamato juice (tomato juice flavoured with spices and clam broth). Sticking with the Canada theme, definitely order a ‘Bryan Adams’ burger while you’re there. As soft and tender as his soulful lyrics.
“This is one of my all-time favourite places in Bondi! The food is great and it has a unique vibe and atmosphere which makes it different from most other pubs/restaurants. The beef nachos are a must! If you get chilli wings, be prepared for your mouth to burn, because they are spicy hot!” – AJ Macca
A swanky haven of plush sofas, dark timber and gorgeous lighting, Eau De Vie is a masterclass in great design. It boasts over 500 spirits proudly displayed behind the bar, and the team will make sure you’re very well looked after. The Eau-De-Vie Bloody Mary is a really strong cocktail (in more than one sense), containing a secret mix of spices and your choice of vodka, gin or bacon bourbon. Because nothing was ever made worse by adding bacon.
“Not the easiest place to find, hidden out the back of a hotel, you’ll be taken away by the 1920’s decor, and the cocktail list is magical. So much so that Eau De Vie is my choice for a cocktail lounge in Sydney. The service is spot on, with the waitress always knowing my choice of cocktail. definitely one to visit.” – beanboy
