Head On Down To These 5 Tropical Cocktail Hot Spots In Canberra
As winter settles in, a touch of tropical escapism never goes amiss, especially if fancy cocktails are involved. Now if you live in Canberra, you’ll know that despite what anyone else might think, our glorious city is full of little bars and hideaways that would rival anything in Sydney and Melbourne. Check out five of our favourite tropical cocktail hot spots!
Bright, breezy and aflush with beautiful greener, Highball Express is a wonderful setting for some warm, Cuban-style hospitality. It’s brought to you by the blokes behind Molly, which should tell you all you need to know about the quality. Rum is treasured beyond all else here, and the Captain’s Punch cocktail is a fine application of the stuff indeed. Enjoy!

Can Thai restaurants count as tiki bars? Sure, why not? Kinn Thai certainly has the drinks for it, and far be it for us to say otherwise. The authentic Thai food here is famously good, but the venue is also renowned as a sleek cocktail bar. Order up a tropical, melon-infused ‘Green Fragrance’, and you’ll see exactly what we mean! It’ll take you away to lounge in the sun, surrounded by clear waters and white sand…

Shorty’s isn’t exactly your classic tiki bar, but again, it’s all in the cocktails. Besides, with burgers like these, it deserves a place on any list! It’s cool, laid back and very welcoming, and perfect for after-work drinks. If you can’t quite decide which drinks, may we humbly suggest the Wildberry Daiquiri? It’s Pamparo white rum, Chambord and cranberry juice, blended with frozen berries. With tastes like this, you’ll be swept away to your own tropical paradise.

Akiba is a deliciously swanky (and swankily delicious) Asian bar/eatery, and the recipient of many awards on the field of winning hospitality. It also does a mean pina colada, with white rum, pineapple juice, coconut and cream. When you combine those flavours with the delicious food on offer, you might as well be on a secluded island in the Asia Pacific, looking at the sun set over the water.
There’s nowhere quite like Akiba – leave a review and share the love!
Everyone’s favourite Indian-Italian fusion joint, Digress is a big, fun, purple temple of music, dancing, funky décor and top-shelf booze. It’s pretty much Canberra’s ultimate party venue, and so an appropriate party drink is required. We reckon you can’t beat the Flaming Zombie, a wicked mix of fruit juice, fire and three different kinds of rum!
