The Rum Diary

Fitzroy

The Rum Diary is a super-friendly Cuban bar with over 200 different rums. The cocktails are expertly mixed and wonderfully creative, with ‘The Lobster Among Prawns’ being our top pick. It’s a deliciously inventive reconstruction of the classic Zombie, with tangy fruit curd and absinthe popping candy. How fun does that sound?

Tiki Lounge & Bar

Richmond

Another tiktastically tiki-ish kind of joint, Richmond’s own Tiki lounge & Bar puts an alluringly darker twist on the whole idea. It’s dimly lit, with a reddish glow casting sinister shadows across the detailed Polynesian statues, and the special Zombie cocktail adds a whole new level of fun. It’s got four types of premium rum!

“A fun bar with a Hawaiian/Pacific Tiki theme. Filled with retro charm and staggeringly yummy cocktails, staff welcome you as an old friend in this relaxed and charming bar. It opens around 4pm towards the end of the week and is very busy. If you need a drink with a cute umbrella but can’t afford a holiday…pop in here ;)” – starwoman8

Jungle Boy

Windsor

Hidden at the back of a sandwich shop called Boston Sub and tucked away behind a refrigerator, you’ll find a hidden tiki wonder. Jungle Boy is a sleeker, more laid-back take on the whole tiki thing (don’t worry, there’s still a zebra skin rug), with a very attractive layout. The Painkiller cocktail is awesome, with rum, Coco Real, pineapple, orange juice and a hint of nutmeg.

Loop Roof

Melbourne

It’s not strictly a tiki bar, as such, but its lush leafiness and creative cocktails earn Loop’s rooftop retreat a welcome place on this list. Speaking of cocktails, the Jungle Bird is our pick of the day, comprised of Goslings Black Seal Rum, Campari, pineapple, lime and bitters. Order a glass, sit back, and gaze up at the lights on the ceiling as you drift away to a tropical paradise.

“Awesome roof top venue in Melbourne! In the ‘Paris’ end of the city, so it was nice to go on a tour round the old buildings to find this venue. Once you arrive it feels like an oasis, where you can admire the old Victorian roof tops and chimneys of Melbourne.” – LauraArthur89

Shebeen Bar

Melbourne

Tucked away and boasting a beautiful vine-draped bar, Shebeen knows how to please. Try the sweet and refreshing Coco Loco Margarita, a sexy little mix of 1800 Coconut, El Jimador Reposado and fresh lemon and orange. Oh, and if you’re looking for something to line your stomach, the chicken ribs and lamb sliders are so delicious that we practically had to be dragged away from the table.

“This bar encapsulates what I love about the Melbourne bar scene – it’s hidden away in an inconspicuous alley way and has a fun South American inspired list of cocktails and really tasty range bar foods to sample and select. The service here is always friendly and the vibe is perfect for a catchup with friends or a date night.”
