Grab your wands and Santa hats; Canberra’s full of magic this Christmas!
Christmas at the Old Bus Depot Markets
Date: Weekends 5-20 December
Location: Old Bus Depot Markets, Kingston
Here at True Local, we LOVE Christmas right down to the leftover leg ham and bad Christmas cracker jokes (what do you get if you cross a snowman with a vampire?). And this December, Canberra’s most famous markets are jazzing it up and celebrating all the best things about the festive season in a special Christmas edition of the Old Bus Depot Markets. Head on down every Saturday and Sunday before Chrissy to catch up on some last-minute shopping and stock up on delicious treats for an epic Christmas feast. From unique and handcrafted gifts for the loved ones to beautifully made decorations for the tree, the markets have all your festive needs this Christmas. Oh by the way, when you cross a snowman with a vampire, you get… frostbite!
Date: 8-16 December
Location: Canberra Theatre Centre
MAGIC. Enough said. But The Illusionists 1903 is no ordinary magic show. Having already dazzled audiences around the world, this troupe of seven of the planet’s most crafty magicians is bringing their high-tech, death-defying and downright hilarious tricks to Canberra. With a performance that looks like it’s something straight out of The Prestige, the show will transport you back to the turn of the century – the golden age of magic – and unveil some of the most mind-boggling illusions ever invented. We guarantee your jaw will be glued to the floor by the end of it (not literally, thankfully).
Art After Dark
Date: 11 December
Location: Canberra Glassworks, Kingston
Canberra Glassworks is opening its doors this December in a special pre-Christmas event for the whole family… after dark. Spooooky. See exquisite glasswork produced by one of Australia’s most talented artists, Peter Vandermark and have the chance to make your own Christmas decorations with the help of professional glass maestros. You’re guaranteed to have the most dazzling tree this year. What’s more, entry is free, plus you’ll get 10% off all your Christmas shopping purchases. Yippee!
Swingin’ Christmas Ball
Date: 12 December
Location: Albert Hall, Yarralumla
Get your dancing shoes on, because this Christmas, Albert Hall is hosting one helluva party! Jazz along to the music of Frank Sinatra and other old time hits performed by Canberra’s own Tony Haley and Leisa Keen, accompanied by the ConneXion Big Band, and swing along with the Canberra Swing Katz, who will be leading the dancing festivities. To fit with the old-school vibes of the historic Albert Hall, the Ball will be accompanied by a Retro Market during the day, where you’ll be able to snap up all sorts of vintage-inspired knick-knacks, what’s-its, and thingy-ma-bobs.
