What’s Happening in Hobart this December
Arts and crafts and food galore, Hobart’s jam-packed with fun this December!
The Tasmanian Whisky Trail
Date: All month
We like to think we’re a little bit classy here at True Local, and what better way to unlock our inner gentlepeople than in the beautiful landscapes of Tasmania. Turns out, the water and climate in Tassie is perfect for whisky making, and now we Aussies do whisky just as well as the Scots do. The Tasmanian Whisky Trail is a trip through the island state’s best distilleries, where you’ll discover all there is to know about your favourite sophisticated beverage straight from the passionate makers behind them.
Lazy May’s Market Festival
Date: 13 December
Location: Long Beach Parklands, Sandy Bay
You know the story: It’s a beautiful, warm summer’s day and all you want to do is laze around by the beach with your best mates. If that describes your perfect afternoon, look no further, because Lazy May’s Market Festival is the place to be this summer. Hang out by the water while taking in the chill festival vibes with all-day live acoustic music, delicious food and arts and craft stalls. We don’t really know what made May so lazy, but we’re pretty sure it had something to do with the relaxing atmosphere by the sand and the sea on a Sunday afternoon at Sandy Bay. So head on down and soak it in!
Comic Art Workshop Exhibition
Date: Until 15 December
Location: Salamanca Arts Centre
If a picture’s worth a thousand words, then comics are… worth a lot of words as well? In any case, at the Comic Art Workshop Exhibition, you can take a trip into the inspired minds of some of Australia’s top emerging artists through a gallery of sketches and drawings that provide an insight into what really goes into a good graphic novel. Led by internationally-acclaimed Master Artists Leela Corman and Tom Hart, the exhibition shows off the creative talent cooked up during a 14-day residency held on a remote island off the east coast of Tasmania. Think of it as a ‘comic incubator’, where amazing art was born and bred, and now you get to enjoy the spoils on display at Salamanca Arts Centre.
Taste of Tasmania
Date: 28 December – 3 January
Location: Princes Wharf No. 1 Shed/Parliament House Lawns
For all you foodie fanatics out there, Hobart’s the place to eat and to be seen eating this December. Ring in the New Year on Hobart’s beautiful waterfront as it is taken over by the Taste of Tasmania food festival. Take a stroll through a buzzing marketplace showcasing Tassie’s world-class seafood, berries, cheeses, wines, beers and other things of a tasty nature. Or for a more in-depth experience, book into one of many Taste Food Tours and have a chat with the island state’s most talented culinary wizards. If you’re looking for a spot to celebrate the beginning of 2016, there’s no better place to catch the fireworks (but be sure to book ahead!).
