Auction Rooms is an outlet for Dench Bakers bread, a cafe and coffee roastery. This trendy cafe has an industrial interior with ceilings that go forever, exposed beams and black-coated wood. They are serious about their coffee, and there is just a small menu of light snacks to accompany the star attraction.
This is one of my all-time favourite places for a leisurely spot of breakfast. My partner and I stumbled across it on a trip to Melbourne, as we were staying in the area, and I am so ridiculously glad that we did. The decor is trendy modern industrial and they have a really sweet sun room/outdoor area with exposed brick walls. The staff there were all so lovely and preceeded to tell us the history of the building and why the cafe got its 'Auction Rooms' name. Actually really interesting, so I am not going to ruin it for you. The food is really lovely and different to your stock standard breakfast menu. I can't wait to go back here.
Ive always liked this place and have been coming here consistently over the years. It is set in an old auction room building so has really unique and authentic industrial dcor. They do award winning coffee which they roast in house. The lines for brunch are usually really long so its best to come early. Ive found the dinner and wine list to be very good as well. Last time I came here I ordered the salmon-chervil-and-fennel croquettes and found it to be delicious and well presented. The service can be varied depending on who you get, but I still rate this place as a Melbourne caf/brunch classic or must visit.
I love warehouse conversions, probably why I wanted to go here as I heard they did a an amazing job on the conversion - and they sure did. The exposed bricks both inside and out coupled with the distressed wood gives this cafe great personality.
The staff are young and hip, happy to explain the menu in depth if it's your first time. I had the pork belly with potatoes & ham terrain which is perfectly seasoned and cooked. I'll definitely be back here for sure to try other items on the menu and strongly recommend this place. Just be mindful there could be a wait.
