All I can really say is...WOW.
Such a moving place that gets you right in the feels. Everything here was beautifully presented, clean and tidy and very well set out. You could spend hours here walking around, reading the names and learning all about the fallen soldiers. The grave where the 'Unknown Solider' layed was such an emotional spot and you suddenly feel connected to him in some way. This is a must do attraction when visiting Canberra!
Lest We Forget
The Australian War memorial is an amazing tribute to those lost by Australia in her history at war.
The dioramas are well done and it's easy to follow the stories through with sections dedicated to the various wars.
There's a couple of cafes and places to stop, sit and reflect.
It's an emotional journey with the Hall of Valour taking much time on the way out highlighting the stories of our VC recipients.
The gift shop holds some great souvenir items and books.
Always worth a visit when in Canberra.
I think the most amazing thing about this location is that they've managed to take something sad and sometimes boring to kids (ie war) and made it into somewhere that a family can go and spend a lot of time in an interesting but respectful way. That takes work, and the fact that they've made the effort deserves to be recognised and affirmed. If I am ever lost at war then I'll know I'll be remembered in a great way by many for a long time to come. Well done!
We were in Canberra for the Easter weekend and keen to show our 8 year old boys the War Memorial. I hadn't been there for over 10 years and although I found it interesting back then, I wasn't sure how our boys would cope. So much had been done since my last visit. There were still the old displays, but so many more new ones and a fabulous discovery centre for children. We were pleasantly surprised to see entry was free, as was a guided tour. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and she not only told us about our history, but also added in personal accounts and stories along the way.
