Phil graduated in 1990 from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, after which he worked in a small animal practice until called up for his military service. In 1992 he was accepted into a residency program in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pretoria. His duties included teaching the clinical pathology course to final year students as well as attending small animal medicine clinics and treating outpatients. In 1997 he graduated with a postgraduate Honours degree. in Small Animal Medicine and Clinical Pathology from the University of Pretoria. He was also invited to become an external examiner for veterinary students at the university. From 1994 he worked in a private practice in Johannesburg (www.birdclnic.net), where he also did relief work for the Johannesburg Zoo. The clinic expanded and Phil found himself doing both veterinary dentistry and exotic animal work. Amongst his achievements there he lists three cesarean sections on pet marmosets in one week, as well as root canals on two Siberian Tigers!, caring for a new born Black Rhino abandoned by its mother, and treating an elephant with an orange stuck in its food pipe.

My budgies life has been transformed.
The team here didn't judge me or my budgie when I brought him in after I rescued him. He is obese from eating generic bird seed and no exercise as well as being unable to fly. I honestly thought I was going to lose him. After my first visit and following th advise from staff, my budgie dropped to a healthy weight in just 3 weeks!! Not only did they help, they recommended I speak to another client of the clinic who has a similar situation to mine to learn more from an outsider. My budgie is healthy, able to fly and completely happy. The staff know their stuff and I'm so grateful for the help!
Can't speak any more highly of Dr Phil, and their amazing staff over the care they are currently giving to our precious spoodle Lucy . The updates with texts, photos and phone calls have been so appreciated. Its comforting to know that Lucy is being cared for with such empathy. Looking forward to getting Lucy stitches outsoon. Lucyis as active as ever, and completely over her surgery. It was comforting knowing that we could contact Dr Phil the Vet literally at ant time we needed guidance or had any concerns; We had his mobile number!! Thanks"
The chicken traing and socialisaion classes help show the wonderful companions pet chickens can be. By the hens learning basic commands the human companion bond with the hens is forged, and the status of the pet chicken is raised to that of a loved pet. Well dome Melissa and her tream for the classes.
This is the best avian vet I have been to! Dr Phil is very knowledgeable and saved my cockatiels life. My cockatiel had ingested fibres from bird toys (rope perches, toys with tassels) and they had become stuck in his crop, which was killing him. People need to know about the dangers of bird toys as many of them are dangerous because of these fibres that cause fibre obstructions in the crop. These toys look bright and colourful and are marketed for birds but they are deadly. And unfortunately it’s only avian/bird vets who understand how to diagnose and treat these fibre obstructions. Because my bird was misdiagnosed by two different vets who didn’t know what was wrong with him. Dr Phil performed life saving surgery on my cockatiel and I am so grateful for his care. My cockatiel has made a full recovery and now enjoys eating pellets, corn and spinach and no bird toy fibres!! Thank you so much Dr Phil!
