A Hahndorf Gem
Cafe Assiette in Hahndorf on a wet winters day, best place to be, three open fire places, cosy, comfortable and inviting. From an extensive menus, which includes a range of salads, seafoods, pies and burgers, plus a wide range of traditional German dishes, we chose for lunch, a Vienna burger, handmade foot long Vienna sausage, fried egg, bacon, grilled onion, tomato, BBQ sauce, mustard, cheese and pickle sauce, plus a Smoked Salmon salad with onion, cucumber and dried tomato. Both meals were extremely generous in size, excellently prepared and presented, in the salad the salmon was generously layered throughout, not just on top, what aread more
On returning to the Cafe Assiette, which is always busy, where a reservation would be advised. After enjoying a very enjoyable breakfast last week, on our return we ordered from their extensive lunch menu. From the Taste Of Germany we ordered, German Pork Belly: a slow braised pork belly, potato salad Sauerkraut, German Pretzel W Horseradish. Perfectly prepared, and very tasty, a generous serving, excellent. From The Sea menu, we ordered a Sea Food Paella, a traditional Spanish Style, prawn, squid, mussels, onion, garlic, green peas, chilli cooked with basmati rice. Served sizzling on a cast iron plate, packed with sea food, a huge helping, delicious and satisfying. We finished enjoying two very well made Mahalia Coffee,s. As it was a cold day we found the three fires kept us very warm and comfortable. After reading other reviews about this restaurant, mostly positive, I found the negative reviews quite puzzling, could not understand where they wereread more
Where do you go for breakfast-brunch on a cold winters day in Hahndorf? After checking out a few cafés we settled for the historic building of the Cafe Assiette for the warmth, comfort, menu range, that we have enjoyed before. Two very warm open fires provided the warmth and ambience only an open fire can create. We chose from an excellent comprehensive range of dishes on offer, from the breakfast menu, Eggs Royal, a very generous serve, two eggs, mushrooms, salmon, spinach and hollandaise sauce, absolutely delicious. Our second choice, scrambled eggs with bacon, once again a very generous serve, very well prepared and presented. Both meals fully met our expectations. The iconic South Australia Mahalia Coffee completed for us a very satisfying meal. Will return for
The antique wall posters and farm paraphernalia on the walls make interesting viewing as you dine.
Cafe Assiette is situated in an historic stone building, on a corner, half way up the main street. The interior is comprised of three separate rooms with three fireplaces, creating a cosy cheerful ambiance. Walls are predominately buttery cream with several feature walls of burgundy with light-shades to match. The back room has one whole wall of written messages called, "The German Message Wall", prints and framed photographs adorn the other walls, these are for sale. The floors are predominately pale natural wood, with the back room having carpet, large barrels, pitchers and tree branches give a lovely rustic character to the decor. An Al fresco dining veranda, sheltered by shade giving trees is ideal on hot sunny days. From a very large and varied menu from light lunches, through to hearty traditional German fare, we had, German Pork Belly, a slow braised pork belly in cashew & apple sauce served with mash & sauerkraut and green salad, a Lambread more
