Recently reopened after a stunning restoration, the Glenferrie Hotel in Hawthorn is renowned for serving typical pub cuisine along with a selection of 5 premium steaks served with hand-cut chips, baby herb salad and selection of sauces. The ornate bar features a good selection of beers and cider on tap as well as an extensive wine list with many by the glass. The atmosphere is laid back and friendly, perfect for a casual catch up with friends.
This was the second pub I visited in Glenferrie (or Hawthorn if you will). While the first pub felt more like a semi-classy bar, this place simply felt like your typical pub, or more appropriately your typical, inner-city Melbourne pub, though it isn’t anywhere near as cool as the pubs that happen to be up my end of town (that is to the north). Okay, there aren’t any pokies, or none that I could see, or even remember, which is a bonus, however the pub itself really didn’t stand out all that much. In fact it felt rather plain, more like a restaurant that has no problems with you coming in and ordering a beer. While they do have an outdoor area, it is basically a smoker’s cage as opposed to a beer garden. As a pub it’s okay, but not fantastic.
