Harry's Cafe De Wheels
Harry's Cafe De Wheels
In the late 1930's during the Depression, Harry Edwards opened a caravan cafe near the Woolloomooloo Naval dockyards. Word soon spread about the fantastic pea-topped-pies he was selling, and in December 2004, more than 70 years later, Harry's Cafe De Wheels was classified by the National Trust of Australia and included on its register.
Now a Sydney icon, Harry's Cafe De Wheels at Woolloomooloo has served hundreds of celebrities and many more locals and tourists alike. To visit the original site yourself, head down to Cowper Wharf Roadway any day or night of the week.

Love this Sydney icon! In a great location right on the water. A great spot to enjoy one of their tasty pastries hot dogs or rolls. Sampled a few of their pies, which were all very tasty. The curry chicken pie was the goods, even better turn it into the famous tiger pie by adding mash potato, peas and gravy. The pulled pork roll a new addition to the menu also a good option. But my favourite has to be the fully loaded hot dog de wheels. A grear place to visit if you are showing someone around Sydney.
I honestly do not understand what all the fuss is about, I didn't understand 15 years ago and I don't understand now. Sure 20 odd years ago, it may be seen as ahead of it's time being a food truck and all, back when "street food" meant unlicensed and unregulated.
But in this day an age, your paying way too much for the name and the so called experience of eating outside, near a smelly pier!
My friend had the pulled pork rolled, greasy tasteless and maybe 'cos it's not 2am in the morning was very average. My bite from his roll was spat out and shared with the seagulls. My Shepards pie with peas was just a luke warm sloppy mess. If I paid more than $5.00 for it I got ripped off, so yeah I got royally ripped off.
Just because its popular doesn't make it good, like 'common sense' sadly it's not that common. Not worth the effort to get here.
Back in the day a trek to the ‘Home of Sydney’s Best Pie’ was the end note of many a good night out not only for eastsiders but for the who’s who of the city social scene. It’s Woolloomooloo water views made it the destination food truck / converted shipping container and since 1945 is now quite the icon. The menu was simple, the towering heap of mash, peas and gravy optional and it set the standard of ultimate meat pie satisfaction that many have tried and failed to replicate for decades!
It was nice to return to this place many years later as an adult experiencing the nostalgia of many late night conversations, recovery and hanging out by the jetty as a rebellious ...read more
An icon of the Sydney food scene, Harry's good truck In Woolloomooloo has stood the test of time and outlasted nearly everyone else around. Once the only outlet for them, they have branched out into other suburbs.
They have new offerings adding to their classic selection of pies and hot dogs. They included the Pulled Pork Roll with its tangy sauce and melt in the mouth pork. They also have Spinach & Feta In Freshly Baked Puff Pastry which is a classic combination perfect as a vegetarian option. The Apple Turnover has the right amount of crunch and delicious flavour to it.
I couldn't go past the 'The Tiger'. Who doesn't love mushy peas, mashed potato, and gravy on their pie. This is what you come to Harry's for! The hot chips have something moreish about them. They're crunchy and have a fantastic seasoning and couldn't stop eating them.
Service is quick here and done with a smile!
