Lort Smith Animal Hospital

As the largest charitable animal hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, we provide care for over 100,000 animals that are lost, abandoned or belong to people in need. We also have a dedicated cattery and kennel facility that, to date, has re-homed or re-united around 200,000 pets.
Part of our mission statement is to 'foster an awareness of animals and the positive impact they have on people's lives'. With this in mind, we work closely with other community organisations to provide various support services such as emergency boarding for pets of people in crisis:, looking after the animals and re-uniting them with their owners once the crisis has passed; pet therapy services, volunteers and their specially trained dogs visiting care homes and hospitals to provide companionship and improve wellbeing; and looking at supporting assistance dogs for people with mental illness or disabilities.

$50 would:
Buy a heartbeat buddy for an abandoned puppy to help prevent depression and anxiety because their mum isn’t around to look after them.
Or a session of behaviour modification training for an abused pet so that it can be resocialised and rehomed.
Or one foster pack to provide care for a litter of kittens for 2

I've been here many times over 20 years with different pets and they've always been very supportive and understanding of our pets' needs. People need to understand that they're almost like a public hospital but for pets. You still need to pay, but it's at a reduced rate. We've been here in the dead of night and were able to still see a vetenarian. They also run a cat and dog adoption centre so bypass your local petshop and adopt a new memberhere.

I've never had a bad experience here. I like that they offer pensioners a discount.

Worst vetcare ever received. I took my dog in as an emergency patient, as my regular vet was closed. This was by far the worst decision I have ever made regarding my pet. The vet had no idea what they were talking about, and took my dog off her medication without telling me why or how it would help. Kept my dog overnight for observation, and wouldn't let me see her the following day. The nurses were not helpful over the phone, and would not give me updates on her condition.

I eventually took my dog to another Vet, and received far better service. (They also promptly put her back onto her medication, and couldn't understand why the vet at Lort Smith took her off it).

If you actually care about the welfare of your pets AVOID Lort Smith at all costs!

My little dog was bitten by a bigger dog on new years eve a couple years ago. The first name that came to mind was Lort Smith and i rushed there from the western suburbs. Although they are not open 24hours to the public but i know that the vets are busily working long hours and overtime to save lives of injured animals behind the scenes as my dog was one of them. We brought her in around 10pm but had to leave as they closed at midnight. Anxious and worried, the staff assured me that a vet will followup to give a status update. I receive 2 calls that night to be advise and updated of my dogs situation. She needed to go in for surgery as she was bitten badly and may not make it. The vet explained the procedure and the cost so i wasn't left in the dark. The 3rd call i received early 5am the next day was to let me know surgery was completed and that my little girl is recovery and she will be fine. Such a relief. My biggest graditude, respect for the vet who had to work on ...read more
