A fairly simple snack order turned into a "tongue burning as I shovelled it down after waiting forever for it" here. I really thought that a serve of chips on a not-so-busy day with a side of sauce wouldn't take long - and that they'd get it right. Sadly when it came after 10 minutes with the wrong gravy I ignored that as I had to snaffle it down to get back to work.
The dining room was ok though in need of a revamp, just an old fashioned pub really.
I've only been here a couple of times, but if you are looking for a place to have a beer while shopping at the central markets, then this place isn't all that bad. They have a couple of outdoor areas, one on the street, and one out the back (and the one out the back has numerous signs indicating that it is strictly non-smoking). The restaurant is out the back, and the prices are okay, but it is not necessarily the cheapest place for a meal (though I can't say much about the food since I have not had the opportunity to have a meal here). The front bar, and the area on the street does get crowded on a Friday evening, namely because it is another popular pub for after work drinks. I also like the photos on the wall showing Adelaide from a bygone era, as well as the front page of the newspaper heralding the end of World War II.
"Hotel opposite Central Markets, great Food at Pub Grub price."
The Metro was built as a 25 bed hotel in 1883. Constructed of Bluestone rubble, chamfered corners, with a dominant balcony and verandahs. These rooms are still used and available for accommodation. The present owners have kept the character of this 19th century hotel. It is clean, tidy, inviting with excellent food and service. We chose for lunch a very well prepared Salmon dish and kangaroo steak, with a fresh salad. Finishing with a very pleasant coffee. Open 7 days, breakfast sat, $8.00 lunch specials, classic Pub accommodation, live bands, Beer Garden, alfresco. This was a great find. Will return.
Used to have a dodgy reputation but is now under new management so I decided to give it a go. The food was fine (although the steak sandwich could do with some salad) but the service still needs some tweaking. It was friendly enough but the meals came out at different times with the last meal coming out about 45 minutes after we had ordered. They were apologetic though.
