It was my forth visit to Nautilus, the last one around six years ago. The first thing I noticed is that the environment is all looking a bit tired. From the bar with chairs/tables that need updating to the tacky Christmas lights over the entrance. For a restaurant charging high end Sydney prices the team really need to give the place a good spring clean and its time for a furniture spruce up. I couldn't help thinking it had lost some of its lustre. The service was efficient and the meal exceptionally good. I thoroughly enjoyed the entree of Lemon Myrtle Spanner Crab Potstickers (sort of like Gyoza). The dessert of Strawberry Souffl was a hit too (their Souffl flavour changes daily). My guests enjoyed the evening but I'm not sure on my next visit to Port Douglas whether I'll dine at the restaurant again - whilst local restaurants like Harrisons and Salsa have moved ahead of the pack Nautilus has lost some of its pizzas.
Superb location and experience. I found the staff helpful and pleasant but too formal. I felt they were looking down at us. The food tried to be good but I found it a little too try hard. My mixed seafood tasting plate with several deep fried items came out cold! Poor form since my partner's dish was a quick fish dish to make. Clearly a kitchen mistake. They did try to make it to me with a complementary sticky with dessert. So I can't be too unkind. Well worth going for the experience at least.
One of the most beautiful restaurants I've ever been to. It's tiered on different levels into the side of the hill, outdoors with high back chairs. The wine list superb, the food sublime and the service impeccable. I understand that Bill Clinton and Jerry Sienfeld have both eaten here and recommend it. You MUST visit here when you go to Port Douglas!
