Just over an hour from Melbourne, Port Phillip Estate on the Mornington Peninsula is a wine and gourmet experience set on a 20 hectare property with vineyard and wonderful views of Westernport Bay and islands. You can taste a wide variety of wines and vintages in the spectacular new cellar door, which has become an architectural landmark in the area. The modernist limestone and glass structure also houses the spacious dining room which serves up a contemporary, regional and seasonal menu by local chef, Simon West.

Port Phillip Estate, also the home of Kooyong Wines, is an architectural marvel; a serious winery, not for the light-hearted (or light-walleted). It sits on a hill, nestled amongst distinctive curved walls that are apparently made from packed earth. They look similar to something which might flank a freeway, but here serve to ensnare the eye and set the tone for what is sure to be a very cool, but very costly experience. As the story goes, my companions and I decided to drop in for a tasting, so, after leaving our car in the generous, function-sized parking lot, we ambled warily toward the large, fortress-like door set in the windowless side of the building. It swung open automatically, releasing the aroma of cooked fish and ripe lilies, which was to keep us company throughout the tasting. Young, neatly-dressed staff directed us to a high-ceilinged, concrete-floored bistro overlooking a breathtaking vineyard vista, where we were informed of The Catch: Port Phillip Estates $10read more
We took mum and dad out for lunch and ate at the bistro (unfortunately the dining room was booked, as usual). Dad enjoyed some wine tasting while mum and I had a tongue wag. The menu is great for sharing plates so we practically ordered everything on the menu. The views from our table overlooked the vineyards and being high up on the hill, the views are spectacular. The service was first class and we were very well attended to. Cant wait to try the dining room next time
