Well, considering its location, I didn't really mind this pub (but then since it is on the main road into Adelaide from the Riverland it is not surprising that there are more than your typical Elizabethans frequenting this place). What caught me out was that you cannot enter the sports bar from the other side of the pub, but the bartender said that many of these old pubs don't have easy access, so he took my beer to the other bar while I walked around the outside. As I said, the atmosphere in this place wasn't bad, though there is no real beer garden (just a smokers) cage, but at least there are a number of pool tables to play a few games of eightball. Oh, I should also mention that they also have a restaurant, and the prices aren't really all that bad either, so it is a decent place to stop by and grab a bite to eat on your way into Adelaide. Also, if you are looking for accommodation, this place also can provide you with a place to sleep.
The Smithfield Hotel is a bit of a mixed bag. Sometimes they can be quite good, other times I have been there it has been downright disappointing.
I certainly wouldn't venture into their front bar or pokies area so cant attest to these things but in terms of their bistro and meals I have been several times. They have a minimal salad/vege bar and whilst what they have is usually of good quality, there is minimal variety and when they run out on a weeknight, they don't top it up. We went around 7pm on a Tuesday night and the hot veges had already run out and they didn't make anymore (despite meal time being 6pm-8pm). So if the salad bar is an essential part of your dining experience I would give it a miss.
Their menu is fairly basic but they do have daily specials which sometimes can be surprisingly good. I wouldnt rule the Smithfield out completely but certainly wouldn't recommend it as a first choice.
