With this establishment's emblem featuring a blonde haired warrior astride a black and red stripped tiger, you can be assured that The Empress Hotel in Fitzroy North is unique. This is a popular live music venue with bands historically performing from Thursdays to Fridays. If you want to escape the noise of the band room, why not have a drink in the public bar? Local beers on tap along with wines and spirits. Meanwhile, the now heated courtyard out the back is the ideal spot to sit all year round, with the beautiful leafy green tree taking centre stage.
I remember when this was a really cool grunge bar with live bands (and since I haven't been in Melbourne all that long that was all that long ago), and I was really disappointed when the place closed down. However one of my friends decided that we should have dinner here one night, which told me that it had re-opened. Well, it isn't a grunge bar any more, rather more like your typical, rather cool, inner-city establishment. They have some decent beers on tap, and the food isn't hugely expensive (though it was a while back when we came here for dinner, though I did come by more recently to check it out again). One thing that really stood out was that the staff were incredibly welcoming and really friendly. Okay, it isn't a grunge bar anymore, but I still really like the place.
Great pub and bar that's reopened with fun and hip vibe. Good place to go for catching up with friends over a beer. Their live sports broadcast via Foxtel eg for the footy always draws a crowd. The meals are what you'd get at a typical pub but very tasty. Definitely recommend the burger and hand cut chips.
