Despite being hidden away in the back streets of Collingwood, the Gem is actually a very popular pub. In fact everytime I've been here I have literally struggled to find a seat. I've only been here a couple of times, but it is not a bad place, except for the fact that everybody else has made that descision as well. There are seats out the front, though like the rest of the pub they get filled up pretty quickly, especially on a Friday night. In fact, one time it was so crowded I had to stand next to the window to find a ledge upon which to rest my beer. While I'm sure pubs love crowds, especially when they are buying drinks, I tend to prefer my pubs to be a little quieter. That would be the only reason why I wouldn't frequent this place.
I was surprised by the variety and quality of the food in this delightful "gastropub". I didn't think a Texas-style BBQ could be so much fun! This is a great spot for a snack, a drink, some cocktails with friends. I had fish which was delicious and there were so many tasty things in wicked sauces. I will definitely return! The live music and atmosphere is great too.
