Whilst I haven't been here for a long time, (and those times consisted of using this place as a nightclub option), I was surprised how low key and great it was on a friday night. I came here after a hair cut and decided to get a nice dinner and drink with a friend, and the food was amazing.
The Golden Sheaf Hotel, or more aptly named ‘The Sheaf’, is somewhere I really enjoy going for a number of different occasions. The space is pretty expansive so it has the ability to cater for most peoples wants and expectations. The outside area is perfect for sipping on cocktails in the sun whilst nibbling on a poached chicken salad. Whereas, their upstairs area is a good space for smaller functions with its own bar, dance floor, DJ space and seating area. The food is really good here for bar food and the vibe of the place is pretty chill, especially for Double Bay. Obviously it is pricey but, I mean, that is the entire area. A nice place to hang out.
I really didn't think much of this place. I'm not sure why but sometimes you wander into a pub and you simply don't like the vibe, and this was the case when I walked into this place. It wasn't as if it was too flash or high class, and it wasn't as if the staff were all that rude either, but something about this place really didn't do all that much for me. They do have a nice outdoor area out the back, which includes an area where you can actually eat meals (which means no smoking) and they have a pretty large front bar as well with a number of pool tables. I also liked the old beer posters on the wall, but I have to say that that was about it. I'd probably give this place a miss if I happened to be back down this way.
The bistro does amazing food, especially during lunch on weekdays! This place does get pretty packed on weekends, and is much nicer during the day than it is at night. They also offer great beers / ciders on tap and show live coverage of many sporting events!
