Frequented by the local university crowd, Universal Pizza on Lygon street is over 30 years old and something of a Melbourne institution. Open long hours, it serves a great variety of pizzas and pastas at affordable prices. Popular on the menu are the chicken parma and porterhouse steak. A kids menu makes it an easy place for families.
We went on a Monday night - while the food was delicious, the service was very very slow. We had to ask 3 times to get wine glasses. And they had no stock of the happy-hour beers or cider either, which was disappointing.
However the food made up for it. The pasta and pizza were great.
We tried the famous chicken schnitzel too- it was delicious.
Here for a work dinner on a Friday night. Universal Italian on Lyon has a very lively atmosphere. Busy and a lot of people here for drinks or late dinner, a lot of chit chatting. The menu has a great selection to pick from. I ordered salmon and for entree everyone shared the fried calamari between a table of 4. Food portion was pretty decent for the price. And it tasted pretty good as well. I really enjoyed my salmon, the skin was crunchy and the side greens was very refreshing. The fried calamari was also great as an entree. Great experience.
