      Schubert & Sons Pty Ltd boasts a history that spans over a century and a half. Proudly one of South Australia’s oldest family operated businesses, Schubert & Sons was founded in the Adelaide Hills town of Hahndorf where in 1862 M. C. (Carl) Bom established the “M. C. Bom Cemetery Stone Works”. The business moved to Flinders Street, Adelaide in 1908, with son-in-law Johann Schubert achieving the position of manager in 1911. From this point the business became known as “Schubert & Bom”. Once Johann’s sons came into the business in the 1920’s, the company name was changed to “Schubert & Sons Pty. Ltd.” The business remains in the family and continues to provide high quality service.

      Schubert & Sons is one of South Australia's leading manufacturers of quality granite and marble monuments and memorials. Located in Adelaide, we have a rich history of over 160 years that has seen five generations of family members coming into the business. We are a family business who use traditional skills and craftsmanship mixed with 21st century technology to achieve high quality memorials.

      Being based in Adelaide, do you also work in the country cemeteries?

      As well as having done work in all the metropolitan cemeteries throughout their 160 years, Schubert & Sons have a long and proud association with many rural cemeteries throughout South Australia. With a heritage starting in the Adelaide Hills town of Hahndorf, their connection to the Adelaide Hills region is unparalleled, proudly serving the communities with a high degree of quality and professionalism.


      What type of lettering lasts best?

      At Schubert & Sons all inscriptions are engraved into the stone, so become a permanent part of the stone. The inscription may then be left natural or high-lighted with either paint, gold leaf or, in the case of Carrara marble, lead. Like any paint outdoors, the elements will have a deteriorating effect on most applications over time.


      How long does it take?

      Because Schubert & Sons individually hand-craft every memorial there is an anticipated turn-around time of approximately 8 - 10 weeks for most memorials. However, consideration is always given to special dates or anniversaries. Whilst there is no "ready-made, off the shelf" memorial, Schubert & Sons will always endeavour to deliver a high class memorial within a reasonable time frame.


      Do you only do memorials?

      Memorials are the main focus for Schubert & Sons, but not to the exclusion of other projects. Over the years Schubert & Sons have provided their services for War memorials, commemorative stones/plaques on many buildings, restoring family heirlooms, even requests from artists, as well as garden and kitchen enthusiasts.


      Do you also sell memorial accessories?

      Schubert & Sons carry an extensive range of memorial accessories including granite and marble chips in a variety of colours; assorted flower containers; various ceramic wares (e.g. roses, statuettes); ceramic photographic reproductions with individually crafted metal frames. Plus Schubert & Sons have access to a broad range of bronze and chrome wares.


      Can I have a personalised/customised headstone?

      Schubert & Sons offer an extensive range of individually hand-crafted traditional style headstones, but also welcome the opportunity to work with you to create a unique memorial which may better reflect the true nature of the person being remembered.


      Is there a difference between the stones available?

      The most popular stones Schubert & Sons use for memorial applications are granite (and norite, which is commonly referred to as black granite). These stones are proven over time as durable, maintaining their beauty and character over many years of exposure to the outdoor elements. White (Carrara) marble is also still a popular choice for its undeniable beauty, but it is a "softer", more porous stone (compared to granite) which can make it vulnerable to staining and weathering.
