Victoria Golf Club is a large famous exclusive private golf club in Cheltenham, Melbourne. It has lots of history as it is the home course of Peter Thomson and many other great players of the past. It is one of the famed Sandbelt courses of south-east Melbourne. Those courses are all built on ancient sand dunes - so have great drainage, fast greens and many natural-looking bunkers. I have only played Victoria once but have walked around it a number of times. It is typically ranked in the top 10 to 15 courses in Australia but I would agree with many that it is over-rated. In my view it simply does not have enough uniquely memorable holes in comparison with the best courses in Australia. The strange way the two nines both end with two par 5s also detracts from the experience. The greens are in great condition and very fast but a very shallow so it is very hard to stay on them. Most holes are just a bit of a dog-leg and lots of bunkers. When I play in November 2014 many of the bunker bases were disappointingly hard and the limited "sand" more like powered dirt. Interstate and overseas players can get on with a letter of introduction. You can also stay at the course for a reasonable rate (check out their deals). The clubhouse is very large and comfortable and the food looks good. Victorians can get to play on various charity and open days or through some of the social golf clubs. Expect to pay $150 to $180 to play a round. Royal Melbourne is a much superior course and I would rather play the Dunes or St Andrews Beach any day rather than Victoria.
