Asbestos is a group name for a number of naturally forming fibrous silicate rock-forming minerals. When asbestos was mined it was broken down from mineral clumps into small loose fibres. When asbestos fibres are airborne they are small, odorless and tasteless. When airborne, the fine fibres are breathed into the lungs creating a health risk. A number of other hazardous materials may be present in older buildings that may present health risks if disturbed during renovation or demolition work. An example of these materials include:Lead paint: often used in houses prior to 1970 Synthetic Mineral Fibre (SMF): used for insulation Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB): found in older fluorescent light fittings, transformers and capacitors

Non-friable (Bonded) Asbestos: When the asbestos is bonded into a matrix such as cement, vinyl and resin and not easily crumbled or pulverised by hand pressure. If non-friable asbestos is damaged or degraded it may become friable and will then pose a higher risk of fibre release. Non-friable (bonded) asbestos is the most common type of asbestos removal. Friable Asbestos: Asbestos containing material that when dry, may become crumbled and reduced to small fibres by hand pressure. This includes asbestos containing material that has been exposed to the elements or other physical damage. Friable asbestos is the most dangerous type of asbestos because of its ability to become airborne.
