Readings is an independent retailer of books, music and film, with seven shops operating in Melbourne at Carlton, Doncaster, Hawthorn, Malvern, St Kilda and the State Library of Victoria – as well as a speciality children’s and young adult bookshop, also in Carlton. We run a lively website, where you can get the latest news on our blog, follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and purchase a range of titles online, with a $3 flat delivery rate anywhere in Australia. Our shops have long been at the centre of the local literary scene, both as meeting places and via our exciting calendar of events, which showcases a range of in-conversations, panels, author signings, special in-store performances and book launches throughout the year. As a cornerstone of the Australian literary landscape, Readings takes seriously its role in growing and sustaining local industries. 10% of our annual profits go towards The Readings Foundation, which was established by managing director Mark Rubbo in 2009 in order to support individuals and organisations wishing to further develop literacy, community and the arts.

The WORST customer service I have ever experienced. Staff were rude and condescending. Despite paying for gift wrapping, staff refused to gift wrap or refund the gift wrapping. While I understand that this was on closing, the way the staff dealt with this was completely unprofessional. I was told to "get out of the store, go to coles, buy some scissors and cellophane and do it yourself" with a sheet of wrapping paper thrown at me. Absolutely horrible! I will never go back.

MORE THAN WORDS
I can go to Amazon, I can buy a Kindle, but books are more than words and the internet at times is harder to navigate than Leo's carpark at 6pm.
Readings in Hawthorn is always buzzing, the tills are always ringing and best of all there are always staff on hand to make an insightful suggestion. I like books and l like to hold them in my hand before as well as after I buy. Readings is a great place to do just that, and no one is going to pop up out of the book and make you another offer.
You can't beat Readings Hawthorn for browsing the old fashioned way.
