The Shrine is another icon of Melbourne. It is always a fascinating visit and has many design features that are worth reading up about before a visit. The inscription on the side for those serving the british empire .. seems more and more archaic each time I visit but I think the view from the top of the shrine looking north is one of the most impressive vistas in Melbourne and is a great place to orient overseas visitors. Entry is free.

The memorial is a beautiful building. Its humbling to wander through the building and realise the enormity of what has been sacrificed. The Shrine was not only built to commemorate those who had served in the First World War. It also honoured the courage of the men, women and children who remained at home. Now it a place to honour all those who have served for Australia.
