Gowans Auctions is 100% Tasmanian owned and is a Hobart and Tasmanian Institution with origins dating back to 1939 when 2 Hobart businessmen, Clay Freeman and Fergus Duff boldly established Freeman Duff & Co in the first year of WWII. And now 80 years on, we conduct more Auctions than any other Auction House in Tasmania and sell on average 1500 lots per week making us one of only a handful of Auctioneers in Australia to do so. We have sold some of Tasmania’s most important Antiques and hold a number of Australian record prices. We specialise in Deceased Estates and just some of our Vendor clients include most Hobart Law Firms and Trustee Companies as well as Commonwealth and State Government Departments including the Australian Antarctic Division and Tasmania Police. Our Purchasers include buyers from all around Australia. Our senior team of Tim Burt & Annette Dano are among the most experienced in Australia with several decades in the Industry each. When are your auctions held?
Our auctions are held weekly on Fridays, featuring a wide variety of items.
How do I get an estimate for my items?
Our experienced staff can provide estimates for your items. Visit us or contact us for an appraisal.
Am I able to obtain a valuation or estimate?
Our experienced valuation team who are able to come to your home or business and appraise your items for market value, insurance & family law. Appraisals can also be done in our rooms. We conduct valuations for solicitors, trustee companies, government departments, accounting firms & liquidators and private vendors. Estimates can be given from photos posted or emailed to us.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash, cheques (with pre-approval), most credit cards, and bank transfers. Payment is due by 5 PM the next business day.
What items do you auction?
We auction antiques, fine arts, militaria, furniture, jewellery, machinery, vehicles, coins, banknotes, and much more.
How do I transport goods to your location?
We can arrange transport of goods to our auction rooms when necessary.
Can I arrange an auction at my home or business?
We conduct on site auctions at your home or business. We can advise if it is more practical to sell your items in situ and have our auction team come to you.
How can I inspect auction items?
We provide ample inspection times before the auction. Thoroughly inspect items as all goods are sold as-is.
Is there a buyer's premium?
Yes, a 17.6% buyer's premium (including GST) applies to all chattel purchases. Vehicle buyer's premiums may vary.
Do you offer delivery services?
Yes, we assist with cartage or freight options both locally and interstate.
Is your staff trained and experienced?
Yes, we have trained and experienced staff.
Can I bid if I cannot attend the auction?
Yes, you can submit an absentee bid form with your maximum bid. We can bid on your behalf.
