General Info

About the Shire The Shire of Ashburton, at nearly half the size of Victoria (105 647 square km), boasts some of the world's largest open cut mines, largest pastoral leases and cattle stations and a thriving fishing industry all set against a beautiful and ancient arid tropical landscape. The region's 6000 residents are employed in a variety of industries including oil, gas, mining, cattle, fishing and tourism. The supporting infrastructure also provides employment and career opportunities. The role of the Shire of Ashburton and local government in general is to conduct a meaningful, dignified and memorable ceremony to mark the occasion of the acquisition of Australian citizenship. Australian Citizenship application forms are available from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship or at Australia Post branches. All enquiries regarding the application for citizenship must be directed to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and NOT the Shire of Ashburton. Building and town planning Much of the Shire is prone to cyclones from November through to April. For this reason, the towns of Onslow and Pannawonica are rated 'Region D Terrain Category 2' and all structures must be designed to comply with SAA Code AS/NZS 1170.1:2002 Part 1 and 2. When submitting plans it may be necessary to provide a certificate from an engineer stating that the proposed structure will comply with the code, the engineer must state his qualifications in such certificate. Visit Ashburton OnslowOnslow has a population of around 800, depending on the time of the year. The town enjoys an idyllic climate all year round. From April to September, however, the weather is particularly beautiful making it perfect for the holidaymaker. Sunrise and sunset beaches surround Onslow with their unique beauty. Visit the lookouts and take in the view of the islands. While Cyclone Vance affected this area, the Shire has reinstated most facilities.
