What is microchipping?

A microchip is a small electronic identification device, about the size of a grain of rice. It is inserted under the skin over the scruff of the neck. A microchip scanner can 'read' the microchip and displays a unique number that is used to identify pets. The microchips implanted at the Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery are ISO-chips (International Standard) which means they will work anywhere in Australia and overseas.

We are taking several pets overseas - can they share a crate?

For safety reasons, generally pets need their own crates. There may be exceptions to this, but guidance on this matter would need to come from AQIS. Please think carefully about this, as all animals are unpredictable, and even the best of friends can have a disagreement when they are out of their comfort zone and in a confined space.

How is microchipping done?

It is a quick easy procedure (like having your ear pierced) and must be performed by an 'authorized implanter'. All of the veterinarians at the Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery have the appropriate accreditation for microchipping under the Act.

Can I sedate my pet for air travel?

Sedating pets for flights is not advisable. Although baggage handlers and airport personnel will take good care of your pet during transit, they are not actually accompanied for the flight. If they are sedated, they are wobbly on their legs, and may stumble over or fall asleep in an awkward position, or even worse, fall asleep with their head in their water bowl. It is better to arrive safe and sound than to arrive with an injury or worse.

How soon after flight arrival can I see my pet?

This will depend on the country you are travelling to and the number of animals travelling that day. No matter how excited you are to be finally re-united with your pet, please remember their safety. Do not open their crate in the airport terminal! They may be feeling a little overwhelmed and may 'run for safety' when the door of their crate is finally opened.

Can I order prescription products from you?

We do not currently sell prescription products over the internet. For prescription repeats for regular clients only, please contact Nicklin Way Veterinary Surgery on 5493 2655.

Sometimes I miss a dose or am late in giving my pet their heartworm prevention treatment. Is there something easier?

Yes! There are many daily and monthly heartworm preventions on the market. There is also a convenient annual heartworm injection that many people find easier to remember. Only a vet can administer the yearly injection and it can be done at the same time as your pet’s usual annual vaccinations. If your pet is not currently receiving heartworm prevention or is more than 2 weeks overdue it is important they are tested for heartworm before commencing any preventative treatment.
