Straight-strung or Overstrung?
In a straight-strung piano, the strings run parallel throughout. An overstrung piano has the bass strings running across over the treble (Steel wire) strings. Over-stringing is preferable, as the string-length produces a much better sound. A taller upright piano or longer grand piano produces bigger volume. It is all in the string-length.
Buying a new grand or upright piano?
In general, if you find a reputable piano dealer, buying a new piano should be no problem. The choice of piano either brand is yours and the amount you pay will, in general, be determined by the quality of the instrument. When you are satisfied, purchase the one you have chosen as another of the same make and model could be quite different in sound and touch.
Buying a second hand piano or restoring your own grand or upright piano?
Once again if you buy from a reputable retailer or get it restored by a reputable tuner, technician or piano builder there should not be a problem as the piano will have been professionally restored should not be a problem, as the piano will have been professionally restored where necessary.
What causes my piano to go out of tune?
We have all experienced the high-humidity, which can cause our doors to stick and during dry times the sticking door mysteriously shrinks and opens very easily. In the same way the soundboard (the speaker of your piano) swells, increasing its crown and stretching the piano strings to a higher pitch. During dry times the tension will be lessened causing the pitch to drop.
