In November, I bought 4m of Veggie Mix from Wodonga Sand and Soil ($424, including cartage) and filled some new beds about 100mm deep. I planted several things into them over the next week: seeds, seedlings, and potted plants.
Over the following weeks, I noticed healthy plants start to get problems, become stunted or stalled, and start to die.
To cut a month-long investigation short, I figured out it was a soil pH problem. The first test I did came back at 9! I thought there was no way that was right, so I tested again in another few spots. The lowest reading I have gotten was somewhere between 8 and 8.5. For those who aren’t aware, pH 8 is the top limit of most garden plants that are considered to like alkaline soil. The vast majority like slightly acidic soil.
When I called about the problem, someone from WSS came and saw the dead and dying plants. I showed him several different types of plants planted on the same day from the same punnet or packet. The ones in their soil were in trouble or dead, while the others were thriving (in my own soil).
I believed I had grounds for my money back (product not fit for purpose), or at least a fix. Despite undeniable evidence from my garden, testimony from two local nurseries, and several gardeners on a local Facebook group, they didn’t care and wouldn’t have a bar of it. They couldn’t conceive that there was a problem with the soil I bought because their veggie garden on site had tomatoes on their (diseased) vine. The owner couldn’t care less when I pointed out disease on his plants. Apparently, I’m the only person to complain. They hadn’t done a test on my soil yet (it was Christmas, so I’ll give them that), but also claimed they didn’t have their soil test results (convenient?).
I said I would be happy if they would give me something to fix it. I suggested compost, but he offered me mushroom compost (often very alkaline), showing he didn’t have a clue anyway, and I was banging my head against a brick wall. I walked away with a $100 refund. I’ll leave that up to you to decide what you think, but I won’t be back.
