Disappointing Service and Misleading Information. Ignored Regulations They Claimed to Follow

I had a disappointing experience with Wembley Electrics when they attended my rental property to replace a faulty pull-cord exhaust fan.

1. Incorrect information about product availability

At their first visit, the electrician told me that the pull-cord version of the fan was “no longer manufactured” and therefore unavailable. This turned out to be untrue. After checking with several local major electrical wholesalers, I found that the pull-cord model is still widely available.

After I reported this to the Department, the electrician returned and changed the explanation, saying that a pull-cord exhaust fan would be “against NCC regulations”.

2. Selective and inconsistent interpretation of the National Construction Code.

Their justification was that the replacement fan needed to be interlocked with the room’s light in accordance with the National Construction Code. However, the regulation they relied upon is not retrospective and does not apply when replacing one model with another.

Even more concerning is that, while insisting on following one part of the NCC, they failed to comply with the second part of the very same clause, which requires a 10-minute run-on timer. The installation they performed does not include this, showing an inconsistent and selective application of the regulation.

3. Careless workmanship

During the replacement, the electrician damaged the surrounding wall/wooden panel paint, which had been freshly painted only days earlier.
