What do I need to bring?

1. A new referral if required. Please ring our clinic if you are unsure and reception staff will be able to tell you* An updated list of your current medication. 2. Your most recent glasses - Don't wear your contact lenses for your appointment * Current Medicare card, concession card, DVA card and private health insurance card. 3. Cash, cheque or credit card (not AMEX or Diners) for payment on the day. 4. If you are diabetic, bring a snack. We have tea and coffee making facilities.

What additional costs will there be?

Apart from the fee for your consultation, depending on the reason for your visit, further tests may be required to assist diagnosis of your condition. These tests do attract additional fees but you will be informed of the cost beforehand.

Can I get laser so I don't need glasses?

Cairns Eye & Laser Clinic uses lasers to treat medical conditions. We do not perform Lasik (refractive surgery) however our ophthalmologists can assess your suitability for refractive surgery and refer you to the appropriate practitioner.

What should I expect during my first visit?

During your first visit, you'll undergo a comprehensive eye examination conducted by our experienced ophthalmologists.

Why do I need a driver and dark glasses?

For your ophthalmologist to examine the inside of your eye, he needs your pupil (like a camera aperture) to be fully dilated (open). Drops will be instilled in your eye to cause this to happen. With your pupil fully dilated, your ophthalmologist uses the special slit lamp to examine inside your eyes. Just imagine the effect of a camera flash lasting at least an hour. You won't be able to see clearly and the glare from the outdoors will make your vision uncomfortable.

What effect does the examination have on my eyes?

In many cases, the ophthalmologist will need to look at the back of your eye/s. If this is the case, drops will be instilled to dilate your pupil/s. Depending on the reaction time, your pupil/s may still be dilated by the time you leave, which prohibits driving and we recommend you bring an escort or driver. Also, bring dark glasses for your comfort as you will be sensitive to daylight. Other procedures may require you to wear a patch, which also prohibits you from driving.

What sets your centre apart from others in the area?

Our clinic stands out for its combination of affordability, quality care, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, ensuring a positive patient experience.

Why do I need a new referral? I've been seeing the same eye doctor for years

Referrals from your family doctor or optometrist last for 12 months from the date of your first consultation. Referrals from your specialist last 3 months. You can see your ophthalmologist without a current referral but you will be unable to take your receipt to Medicare Australia for your subsidy as they will only pay on a current referral. No referral also makes diagnosis and treatment more difficult as your ophthalmologist will not have a current history and reason for your visit.

How long will my visit take?

We generally advise patients 2-3 hours, though this can vary due to other tests being required, which could extend your visit or an unexpected delay due to another patient's complex case or an emergency. We try to keep patients informed if there is a delay. If you decide to book for surgery, your time in the clinic increases due to further tests and the informed clinical and financial consent process.

How long will my visit take?

We generally advise patients the duration of their visit is from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the reason for the visit.

Can I undergo laser eye treatment at your centre?

Yes, we offer laser eye treatments for various conditions, such as refractive errors and diabetic retinopathy.

Does your centre offer emergency eye care services?

Yes, we provide urgent appointments for eye emergencies to ensure timely treatment and care.

Is your centre equipped with the latest technology?

take your money no result part from been treat like a atm machine

This clinic I not recommend. My surgery was planned on 2-3-2023 without notice it was canceled. So when I show up in the day of the surgery at 7AM in the morning I return home. When I went to the clinic to ask why I was not told the appointment was canceled the told me the spoke in a message on my answer machine. Strange because that I have never on. Ok maybey I have a loud voice but when I told them I would seek help from a lawyer That was taken as a threat an I was ask to leave if not security would be called!!!! Now the refuse to do the operation the money $651.- minus a refund from medi care $177.- is refused to refund. unbelievable I feel like been not taken care of where a patient pay a easy $10000 fer a treatment. Ask wy the appointment is canceled and inform them to seek help from a lawyer and seek attention in social media is reason to cancel now by them to end the agreement. I have to see a different clinic I have been told. Think 2 times before you make a appointment with them It can cost easy $500.- and end up with nothing
