Rightway Driving School

WARNING: DO NOT BUY THE 100HR PACKAGE. Had an absolutely devastating experience with this driving school and my instructor Walter Currie. I was no doubt one of their longest customers; I spent over $5k on the 100hr package and took lessons with Walter for over a year. I am as well acquainted with this driving school as one could possibly get. Unlike many of their customers who are teenagers with parents paying for their lessons, I was 21 and funded the package entirely by myself. I had zero experience with driving when I started lessons with Coastwide and didn't know what to expect. I naively trusted this driving school with the $5k I'd saved up over years and years of my young life. It was a tremendous pity that I was allocated such an apathetic, careless instructor given my circumstances, and even more of a pity that this driving school is driven by nothing but greed.



My instructor was overworked, exhausted and unenthusiastic. He had little consideration for the development of skills one needs in everyday driving situations, and focused on getting me to be just good enough to pass the test - and even with this narrow focus he failed. For example, he never once taught any form of parking needed in carparks. We did highway driving only twice in those 100hrs. And he avoided teaching me parallel parking because, as per his words, "it's hard to find parallel parks in Greenslopes, you won't be tested on it" (in fact, I ended up being tested on it at my Greenslopes test location). I had also been doing hill starts incorrectly the entire time (often leading to stalling of the car) and he identified the problem only after I'd failed the test twice already. I ended up failing the test three times and not once throughout my time with this instructor did he ever express any concerns about my ability to pass the driving test. He even expected me to try again a fourth time! This exhausting experience with coastwide has financially crippled me and I haven't taken any driving lessons since. It has been two years and I still haven't gotten a licence. When I expressed these concerns to the driving school at the time, they spent months skirting around the issue and making excuses. I persisted in my complaint and they finally offered me a measly two (2) free lessons with another instructor to shut me up. Do NOT trust this driving school. I lost a fortune and a hundred hours of my life that I will never get back.
