I fail to see where the parent responsibility is in these cases? As a parent it is your duty of care to make sure your child is receiving the required amount of sleep to be able to participate effectively in their education. It is also not good practice to have a student in sick bay for 4 hours as this space may be required for a student who is actually sick. I suggest the parent who knows that their child is lethargic due to lack of sleep (the school does not have a trained doctor/nurse at their disposable to diagnose the student isn't sick and the school is not in the house where the student is awake all night - I assume the parents are!) takes responsibility and disciplines their child appropriately and doesn't allow Pay TV and other devices to be used. Maybe the parents of this student need to engage in parenting classes to support them in setting boundaries for their child.

I question the Werrimull P-12 School's policy in regards to truancy.
It appears a child only has to be lethargic from staying up until all hours of the morning the night before for them to be allowed to go home.
Naturally children will continue to avoid School when it is so easy for them to do so.
The Werrimull P-12 School has a sick room.
A child put in this room without devices such as a computer and access to Pay tv is much more likely to think twice before complaining they are sick.
I know of children who attend Werrimull P-12 School who have at least 1 day a week off School because of apparent sickness when in my opinion their is clearly nothing wrong with them and they simply want a day off School so they can return home to play on their computers all day and watch Pay tv.
Unless the Werrimull P-12 School change their policy in regards to children skipping School for no reason the education of these children will continue to suffer.
I know of parents who don't even bother to send their children to School even if they don't believe their child is genuinely sick because they know that the School will only send them back home at the mere mention of the word sick.
Perhaps three or four hours spent in the sick room with no form of entertainment before deciding to send the child home would be an appropriate deterrent for such behaviour.
These children need to be taught that being tired from lack of sleep doesn't constitute sickness and that it certainly doesn't constitute a day off School to engage in fun activities.
It's about time the Werrimull P-12 School looked at other options rather than the easiest option for them when it comes to children and truancy.
